At the AMES pipemill plant, Pipes are formed starting from the plate set in the edge milling machine and rolled in the three-roll bending machine. The rolled cylinder is then processed into the edge crimping machine prior to tack welding. Tandems inside SAW and outside SAW are then performed to ensure a joint efficiency factor of 1. Mechanical expanding is conducted next for 0.8%-1.5% expansion ratio to relieve the pipe of its accumulated stresses during forming and welding processes. Mechanical expanding enhances the dimensional parameters.

Hydrostatic testing, ultrasonic inspection, X-ray inspection, and final, visual and dimensional inspections are also conducted. The mill proven capability for producing high strength heavy wall line pipe is up to X70. AMES offers a wide choice of pipe diameters from 16”-60” (508-1524 mm) and 0.250” -1.200” (6.4 - 30.5 mm) wall thickness with grades ranging from API 5L Grade B - X70 and pipe length of up to 40 feet (12 meters).


AMES Pipe Mill Limited gives utmost priority to health and safety. The company aim to comply with international standards to provide a healthy and safe working environment for our employees and developed a Health and Safety Policy that undergoes regular audit by the Top Management.

The facility is provided with health and safety coordinator, first aides, fire and fire prevention team trained by accredited service providers. A fully equipped company clinic with an ambulance is available to serve our staff whenever needed.


AMES Testing Laboratory is supported by highly qualified staff to perform destructive testing procedures recommended via the API 5L Monogram Licensing. The laboratory is provided with different state of the art quality testing equipment that is regularly upgraded to meet the latest standard requirements and calibrated for precision and accuracy.

The destructive testing procedures applied as standard for all produced pipes in AMES pipemill facility are as follows: 1. Tensile Test 2. Guided-Bend Test 3. Charpy Impact Test 4. Chemical Analysis Test 5. Hardness Test 6. DWTT (Drop-Weight Tear Test) 7. HIC (Hydrogen-Induced Cracking) Test 8. Nick Break Test 9. Side Bend Test


Since the establishment, our employee education and training had been a part of AMES culture to strengthen its work force and promote professionalism among the employees. The company aims to train her new recruits in-house established Training Centre for a period of two years prior to their actual assignment in the manufacturing plant. Most of our middle manpower would be sourced from Edo state technical and vocational training schools and working in partnership with the Edo state government to grow sustainable skills for our growing youth population. Our education and training program covers not only orientation for the job but also the intricacies of the different trades in the steel pipe manufacturing business such as safety, basic steel processes, cutting, grinding, welding, machining, pneumatic, hydraulics, mechanics, electrics, electronics, machine operation, technical drawing, dimensioning and measurement.

The classroom training program will be later integrated with on-the-job-training for the work training process to be more effective. Employees would be introduced to line production work after 2 – 3 months of administrative and technical training including good working attitude, discipline and fulfilling their job responsibilities in the office or in the shop floor.

AMES will add a new dimension to its training and development program. The training on Non-destructive Testing was introduced in-house which is of high importance in steel pipe manufacturing and inspection processes. Non-destructive testing methods taught in AMES consist of visual testing, penetrate testing, magnetic particle testing, radio graphic testing and ultrasonic testing in accordance with ASNT CP-189. Other related subjects such as safety, quality, basic inspection and feedback mechanism form a part of the training. The non-destructive training program in AMES strictly follows the international standards to obtain certification after examination.

External training and in-house training by Consultants will also be held in the company for upgrading of the employees knowledge and skills. This is not only for the new recruits but for all employees in general to promote and enhance their skills in various fields of the organization. Education and Training is also an integral part of the company quality system. Competence or skills mapping, developmental training program and periodical assessment evaluation are practiced to identify the training needs and the desired level of competence required from the training program. Education and training is one of the continuing activities of AMES Pipe Mill and Coating Plant Limited.
